ACS Career Services Workshops : Mon, June 25, 8:00 AM-12:00 PM

Career Workshops and Individual Résumé Reviews will be offered that will give members a unique insight into the job market. The workshops are designed to help chemical professionals and students at all levels understand the current workplace and take advantage of employment opportunities. (Room TBD).

Planning Your Job Search: Mon 8:00-9:30 AM
This workshop addresses employment trends and professional values (self assessment). Then, the process of networking is explored: who is in your network, how to expand it. Strategies such as informational interviewing will be discussed.

Preparing a Resume: Mon 9:30-11:00 AM
Your résumé is a personal introduction and leaves an impression. In this workshop you will learn which personal data format is right for your "marketing plan," and construct a winning résumé.

Effective Interviewing: Mon 11:00-12:30 PM
Many job seekers think their work ends once an interview is secured. Think again! This one hour workshop will examine the entire interview process, types of interviews, frequently asked questions, and how to evaluate an offer.

Individual Resume Review Appointments: Mon 1:30-5:30 PM
An ACS Career Consultant will be available to provide individual résumé reviews and career assistance from 1:30 -5:30 PM. You must bring a copy of your résumé. Sign-up will be available at meeting registration.

MicroLab Workshop: Mon, June 25, 8:30 AM-10:00 AM

Title: A New Look at Spectrophotometry – and some other things you can do with computers: Using computers to cut costs and buy time for inquiry.

Computers can do a lot more for your lab students than just quickly collect data using small, inexpensive, and safe samples. Both POGIL and the Science Writing Heuristic advocate an inquiry process that starts with a question about a real chemical system. Students and their instructor turn these questions into an experiment, conduct the experiment, and use their observations to develop a model of the system – a model that explains the behavior they observed. With additional runs through this plan -> work -> evaluate cycle, they improve their model and understanding of the chemical concept.

Computer-based lab systems can help students structure and formalize their experiment design. Students can quickly collect, analyze, and graph high quality data. These graphs, generated immediately and large enough for students and instructor to see, focus in-lab discussion and evaluation of the experiment. Students can clearly see cause-and-effect relationships. They understand the experiment and the concept when they leave the lab.

We will do several live experiments from the introductory chemistry lab that demonstrate this process – experiments in thermochemistry, the behavior of gases, acid-base chemistry, and a new look at visualization in spectrophotometry.

POGIL workshop: Mon, June 25th 1:30 - 5:00 PM

Title: Strategies for Supporting STEM Student Learning with Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL)

This workshop serves as an introduction to POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) and an exploration of the benefits of this approach to active-learning in the classroom. Exploring the POGIL approach is helpful for anyone who is looking to expand their teaching "tool box" for actively engaging students and supporting higher order thinking. The workshop will be appropriate for both high school and university level teachers in all STEM disciplines.

Participants will experience a POGIL-based learning environment, analyze activities to understand how guided-inquiry is structured in a POGIL classroom, and consider classroom facilitation and other issues related to the implementation of the POGIL approach.
